Abai Kunanbayev's Literary Memorial Museum was opened in May 1980 on a voluntary basis on the initiative of the Culture Department of the Abai City Executive Committee.

According to the order of the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR from October 30, 1980 became a branch of the Karaganda regional museum of local lore.

In 1993 the museum was transferred to the balance of the budget of Abay.

From 1997-2008, the museum was run by the Abai district department of culture.

According to the resolution of the akimat of the Karaganda region dated September 9, 2008 No. 25/10 "On some issues of state organizations of culture and art" KGKP "Literary and Memorial Museum Abay Kunanbayev" was transferred to the culture department of the Karaganda region.

In KGKP "Literary-Memorial Museum of Abai Kunanbayev" 8 staff units.

The total area of ​​the museum is 189.1 square meters.

The museum consists of 5 exhibition halls:

1. Life and social activities of Abai Kunanbayev;
2. The creative heritage of the great poet;
3. Abai and the present;
4. "Sherubai-Nura - the prehistory of the city of Abay".
5. The city of Abai is a part of Independent Kazakhstan.
